Kearney Oktoberfest: 2014

It's all about the Craft Beer

Published: Wednesday, October 1, 2014   /   Categories: Events

In honor of the upcoming Kearney Oktoberfest, it is going to be about craft beer all of the time. Craft Beer is a booming industry that is taking the United States by storm. According to the Brewers Association website as of 2013, 22 craft breweries have made their home in Nebraska rolling out approximately 25,000 barrels of craft beer per year (State Craft Beer Production & Sales Data).

The following are some concepts related to craft beer and craft brewers:

  • Craft Brewers are small brewers
  • The hallmark of craft beer and craft brewers is innovation. Craft Brewers interpret historic styles with unique twists and develop new styles that have no precedent.
  • Craft Beer is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley; interesting and sometimes non-traditional ingredients are often added for distinctiveness.
  • Craft Brewers tend to be very involved in their communities through philanthropy, product donations, volunteerism and sponsorship events.
  • Craft Brewers have distinctive, individualistic approaches to connecting with their customers.
  • Craft Brewers maintain integrity by what they brew and their general independence, free from a substantial interest by a non-craft brewer.
  • The majority of Americans live within 10 miles of a craft brewer.

Craft beer is becoming a dominant industry not only state-wide but locally as well. Thunderhead Brewing is a growing brewery in Kearney and serves a delicious variety of beer handcrafted by an experienced staff of beer lovers. In order to brew the best beer, a brewer must have the right tested water. Duane from Ward Laboratories states, "Water is a major component in the quality, taste, complexity of your beer. Regardless of whether you use tap orbottled water, a mixture of the two, or additives to get the chemistry right, a brewer must know the ion levels in the water before starting. We offer an ideal water test for all necessary chemical knowledge needed to brew great beer, plus dozens of other tests for general water quality and health"

There is so much to learn about craft beer and how it is becoming more and more popular. Come to Kearney Oktoberfest and experience local craft beer at its finest.
