The longest ten minutes of my life!

If you’re like me your children’s safety is one of the most important things you think of day in and day out. It’s a scary world out there and the stories I hear about the type of people out in our world make me cringe…but we can’t keep our kids locked up in a bubble and so we let them be kids.

The night before Halloween, I lost my almost two year old at the Children’s museum, for about ten minutes. I knew he probably didn't walk out the door and my husband and I were sure he was in some small little place in that huge building. But with hundreds of other children coming and going, that ten minutes was the longest ten minutes of my life. The feeling of not knowing where he was, was he hurt, did someone take him? Those horror stories I've seen on TV and heard on the news, is the only thing I could think of. Nothing else mattered during that ten minutes, but finding him! Thankfully one of my friends was there to watch my 5 year old so we didn't lose him too. My husband was worried that Riley was scared not knowing where we were, but I knew better. He was thinking “ha, I got away and I’m free!” He is such a stubborn, independent, ornery, 22 month old and all I wanted to do was to find him!

We did finally find him…in the front seat of the ambulance and needless to say, we didn't take our eyes off him the rest of the night. He didn't understand that he’d done anything wrong, he just wanted to play like all the big kids were. I know every parent has probably been in a similar situation, and since my children are still fairly young, this was the first time I had lost one of them and it was scary.

I thank God that he was safe and as parents we were reminded that we can't take our eyes off of him for one second! I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!
