HR Tip-How to Run an Effective Meeting

Published: Thursday, October 15, 2015   /   Categories: Leadership

Most employees consider meetings a waste of time and a drain on productivity, but www.99u.com suggests that there are new rules to consider.  These new rules are practiced by companies like Google and Apple.

  1. All meetings must have a stated purpose or agenda.  Without an agenda, meetings can easily turn into aimless social gatherings rather than productive working sessions.  It’s a good idea to write the agenda in advance of calling the meeting (may reveal that a meeting is not needed).  When written, send it out in advance in an email.
  2. Attendees should walk away with concrete next steps or Action Items.  From Apple to the Toastmasters, the world’s most successful organizations demand that attendees leave meetings with actionable tasks.
  3. The meeting should have an end time.  Constraints breed creativity.  By not placing an end time, we encourage rambling, off-topic and useless conversation.

These new rules are common sense rules, but wise to follow to have a more productive meeting. For more ideas, visit www.99u.com/articles/7220/how-to-run-yourmeetings-like-apple-and-google
