Majestically Old School: Nostalgia at Ham's.

Updated: Sep 20, 2019

If you have heard of The Bricks in downtown Kearney, you know that they house a lot of history. They have a century or more of great stories and if the walls could talk, oh the stories! That is what makes our first food vendor, Cunningham’s on the Bricks, an exciting story to tell. The building itself has a rich history of business, but it was the first business that provides the name. The Journal-Enterprise which was a newspaper was owned by L.R. Cunningham; the mashup of names is how Cunningham’s Journal, the restaurant, received its name. In 2018, owners Mike Anderson and Yousef Ghamedi opened a second location in south Kearney. Due to the separate locations with completely different atmospheres, the name of the business was tweaked a bit to represent the locations. So was born Cunningham’s on the Bricks and Cunningham’s on the Lake.

While there are now 2 locations, the company still sticks to their original motto of “Escape the Ordinary.” The Bricks location provides that nostalgic, college experience in their upstairs area lovingly referred to as The Loft, and a more laid back, sports bar feel on their main floor. If you’re looking for an outdoor experience that feels tucked away in a forest while being in the middle of town, be sure to check out The Courtyard which is their unique outdoor patio area. The Lake location is definitely unique to Kearney as it looks unlike anything in this area. With a mix of reclaimed wood, huge murals, and expansive windows looking out onto the lake, you’ll feel a thousand miles from home while still being served the very best local fare. The company wants to provide the very best atmosphere, always give the best service with exceptional teamwork behind the scenes, and of course create great menu options that can cater to any palate. Above all, community is what is most important, and they strive to ensure a consistent experience every single time you visit.

In case you were wondering why we are sharing all this info, we are gearing up for Oktoberfest and will be sharing the background of each of our breweries and food vendors attending. When asked why Cunningham's continues to attend, they said "we attend Oktoberfest to ensure we keep providing the very best experience to all of our customers, to be part of the atmosphere, and most of all because we LOVE helping and supporting the Chamber." Helping to bring new businesses to town and being a part of Kearney’s growing culture is something they feel is extremely important, which is very near and dear to our hearts here at the Chamber!
