The Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce's Senior Coalition recently toured the G.W. Frank Museum of History and Culture, located on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. This historic mansion, built in 1889 by entrepreneur George Washington Frank, showcases the elegance of the Gilded Age and reflects Kearney’s early development. Once outfitted with modern amenities like electricity and plumbing, the home symbolized innovation and ambition. Frank’s impact on Kearney included founding the city’s hydroelectric power plant, an electric trolley system, and the development of key infrastructure.
Over the years, the mansion served various roles—from a sanitarium to the Nebraska State Hospital for Tuberculosis—before being restored as a museum in 1973. Today, the Frank Museum preserves and shares Kearney’s rich history through exhibits, tours, and educational programs. The Senior Coalition enjoyed learning about the building’s transformation and its continued role in connecting the community to the past.
