Say hello to Jeni Leopold, a proud Kearney native who is not only raising her family in the same town she grew up in, but also giving back in ways that make a lasting impact.
Jeni and her husband were both born and raised in Kearney and are graduates of Kearney High School. Now, they are passing that deep hometown pride on to their daughter. For the Leopolds, Kearney is not just where they live; it is where generations of memories have been made and where community still feels like family. “Whether it's attending school events, enjoying local parks, or just being surrounded by familiar faces, it’s a wonderful place to raise a family,” Jeni shared.
After growing up here, staying in Kearney was an easy decision. What really made it stick was the people. “There’s something truly special about living in a town where people genuinely care about one another,” she explained. Jeni’s husband runs Leopold Painting and Wallcovering, and through the business, they have developed meaningful connections with neighbors and customers alike. For them, it is not just about serving a community, it is about being part of it.
When it comes to local favorites, Jeni lights up talking about Barista’s Daily Grind. It is more than just her go-to stop for an iced white mocha, it is where her younger sister Marti, who has Down syndrome, works and thrives. “I’m so proud to support a business that provides her with not just a job, but a sense of purpose and inclusion,” Jeni said. It is places like this that show just how special Kearney is, a community that truly uplifts and embraces everyone.
One of Jeni’s favorite annual events is Heritage Day at Yanney Park. It is the kickoff to summer she looks forward to every year, filled with live music, fireworks, local booths, and fun for all ages. “It’s the kind of event that brings everyone together and reminds you why you love living here.”
If you are looking for a hidden gem, Jeni recommends checking out the Kearney White Water Trail. “It’s peaceful, scenic, and a great way to unwind,” she said. Whether you're floating, kayaking, or just enjoying the view, it's a special spot that not enough people take advantage of.
For Jeni and her husband, one of the most meaningful parts of life in Kearney has been slowly transforming their fixer-upper into a home. “It’s a work in progress, but it’s our work in progress,” she said with a smile. Every brushstroke and project is another piece of their story, and another memory made.
The Leopolds are also big believers in giving back. Jeni volunteers at Kearney High track meets and helps coach basketball for the Special Olympics, where she finds immense joy in encouraging athletes to grow and shine. “There’s so much heart in this town, and I love being part of that,” she said.
When asked to describe Kearney in one word, Jeni chose community. “It’s a place where people genuinely care about each other, and you always feel supported,” she said. “Kearney may be small, but it has a big heart.”
And that heart is what makes it such a beautiful place to raise a family. With good schools, tight-knit neighborhoods, and meaningful opportunities around every corner, Jeni is proud that her daughter will grow up with the same sense of connection and belonging that she and her husband experienced as kids.
